Quick answer
LF and F8 E1 are long-fill alerts on Whirlpool top load washers, tied to the drain hose and water supply.
Model note: Whirlpool reuses codes across series and model years, so LF may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.
Whirlpool®
What this codemay mean.
A plain-language reading of the code — always confirm against your model’s documentation.
Mean
The washer is taking too long to fill, which may point to a drain hose or water supply problem.
Your Whirlpool top load washer shows LF, or F8 E1, when a fill takes too long. The owner’s manual ties that to two areas: how the drain hose is set up and whether water reaches the washer properly.
Water coming in
Confirm that hot and cold supplies are both open and that each inlet hose is attached. This washer senses the supply and wants both hoses delivering water to the water valve. If not, the control reports a water pressure sensor problem, locks the lid and pumps out for 8 minutes.
Drain hose setup
A hose reaching further than 4.5 in. (114 mm) into the standpipe can let the washer siphon, filling and emptying together, so it never gets to the level it expects. Check these points:
Fit the U-shaped form on the hose and fasten it firmly to the standpipe or tub.
Only 4.5 in. (113 mm) of hose should sit in the standpipe.
Leave the drain opening uncovered by tape.
The standpipe must be at least 39 in. (99 cm) tall.
Look for kinks or clogs: straighten the hose and clear the utility sink drainpipe.
Codes to compare
If the symptom is different, try Ld for slow draining or HC when the hot and cold hoses are swapped.
