Quick answer
Whirlpool top load washer drn or F9 E1: the washer drains too slowly. Hose installation checks from the manual.
Model note: Whirlpool reuses codes across series and model years, so drn may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

What this codemay mean.
A plain-language reading of the code — always confirm against your model’s documentation.
Mean
Long drain: the washer is taking too long to drain water.
Long drain explained
When a Whirlpool top load washer shows drn or F9 E1, it is signalling a drain pump system problem with a long drain. The washer is taking too long to drain.
Steps from the manual
Review how the drain hose is installed. It should not extend more than 4.5″ (114 mm) into the standpipe.
Fit the drain hose form and fasten the hose firmly to the drainpipe or tub; never tape over the opening.
Keep the hose end higher than 36 inches off the floor, otherwise the washer could siphon and fill and drain together.
Look for a kinked or clogged hose.
