Error code AF / Check Vent
Appliance Dryer

Quick answer

AF and Check Vent point to a clogged lint screen or vent on Whirlpool dryers. The manual lists cleaning and vent checks.

Model note: Whirlpool reuses codes across series and model years, so AF / Check Vent may mean something different on another appliance or generation. Confirm this against your model’s documentation and record your full model number before acting.

Whirlpool

What this code may mean.

A plain-language reading of the code — always confirm against your model’s documentation.

AF (Restricted Air Flow) points to a clogged lint screen or vent.

AF explained

Whirlpool’s help text calls AF a Restricted Air Flow code. A clogged lint screen or vent is the indicated problem, and the vent may be crushed, kinked or routed with too many turns. The dryer carries on running, and any key press removes the code and returns the display to the estimated time remaining.

Which dryers

AF is documented for commercial-grade residential dryers. Dryers of certain other models offer a “Check Vent” light, an Automatic Cycles feature that reports airflow through the dryer and vent system. It lights during the sensing phase at the start of a cycle if airflow is low or the vent is blocked, stays lit for the full cycle, and goes out at the end of the cycle, on touching Power, or on opening the door. Poor airflow can hurt dry times and overall performance even though the dryer keeps operating.

Vent check routine

  1. Empty and clean the lint screen.
  2. Inspect the run from dryer to wall for crushing or kinks.
  3. Clear lint and debris from that run and from the exterior exhaust hood.
  4. Compare your venting with the run length and elbow count recommended in the installation instructions.
  5. Restart on a heated Timed Dry cycle.

A quick airflow test: after 5-10 minutes of running, hold your hand beneath the outside hood. Air weaker than a hair dryer on high means lint should be cleaned out along the whole system and the hood. Where the message stays, the whole home venting run should be cleaned; contact a venting specialist.

Other dryer codes

Door problems on compact heat pump dryers are covered in dC, and a power-reset code is E2.
